Frequency Specific Micro-Current(FSM)
Introducing FSM… “Energy Medicine”
The most interesting aspect of FSM, in my opinion, is that it hails as the “homeopathy of electrical stimulation.” While the subtle healing aspects of the modality remain to be fully elucidated, the approach is clearly beneficial and well regarded among many professional sports teams for its ability to selectively heal tissues and physical conditions. It stands as one of the most promising and interesting physical medicine adjuncts we use in our office. We recommend it to patients after minor accidents as a preventative measure and for all musculoskeletal/pain conditions in general. However, we also know it does much more in the way of stimulating healing on many levels. Frequency Specific Micro-Current is FDA approved for the same conditions as all electrical stimulation (TENS) devices.
So what is Microcurrent?
Micro-current is a sub-sensory physiological electric impulse measured in millionths of an amp. Living cells and tissues generate current in the micro-amp range. Every time you move a muscle your brain is sending micro-current impulses to the muscles so that you can type a letter, play basketball or go for an evening walk. While you may not feel the impulse, our bodies are extremely sensitive and their effects are profound. By comparison a typical muscle stimulator device (i.e. TENS unit) produces impulses in the milliamps range, which is a 1000 times greater. There is tremendous value in using electrical devices that deliver stimulation to the body in this subtle range.

Micro-current therapy is safe and has been in use for over a century. It was quite popular in the early 1900’s and was used by approximately 5,000 health practitioners in the U.S. before 1934 when the American Medical Association abandoned energy medicine and drugs and surgery became the standard of medical care in the United States.

How does Micro-Current help?
“Micro-current increases the production of ATP, the substance your cells use for energy, by up to 500%. It also increases protein synthesis and waste product removal.” -Cheng, 1987
As a physiologic modality that increases ATP (energy) production within the cells and tissues, FSM can impact any given tissue’s healing rate. When the correct micro-current is used there is almost an immediate reduction in muscle tension and myofascial holding patterns release in seconds. Scar tissue is softened; trigger points are desensitized; and swelling is reduced. The suggested mechanisms of this occurrence involve the immune and nervous system. In many situations changes are seen within patients within just a few weeks of initiating treatment. Treatments are often profound, long lasting and can be permanent. Sometimes the treatments are more effective and efficient that medications. For example, animal research shows that the frequencies used to reduce inflammation in mice reduced inflammation by 62%. Prescription drugs reduced inflammation by 45% in the same mouse model by comparison.
Why Frequency Specific?
Specific frequencies seem to induce specific effects on cells and other tissues that resonate with those frequencies. For example, there is a specific frequency for nerves, a different frequency for muscles, another for bones and another for tendons, etc.… The “frequency specific” aspect of treatment is as important as the micro-current itself. Depending on the settings of the treatment all the different tissues of the body can be positively impacted including, muscles, tendons, ligaments, nerves. Frankly every tissue in your body can be beneficially effected. In addition to each tissue having its own unique frequency, there are specific frequency for tissue conditions such as inflammation, scars, loose connective tissue, et cetera. How do “specific frequencies” help?
It is hypothesized the frequencies work through biologic resonance. A high pitch sound can shatter a glass when it resonates with its crystalline structure. Micro-current frequencies seem to be able to resonate with biologic tissue when chosen correctly. Once the tissue is “re-set” it seems to stay in its healthy configuration, baring no new insults, with basic nutritional support, and good health habits which include, proper rest, water intake, the results can be permanent.
Any known side effects or risks?
There is no record of any permanent harm caused by Frequency Specific Micro-Current. The body can respond or react in many different ways that may make you uncomfortable for a limited period of time. When detoxifying you could have a fever or diarrhea etc. while the body is releasing toxins, waste and metabolic products your body has been hanging onto for years. Some people have similar reactions after a massage but the reaction after micro-current tends to be stronger. Post reactions, which are actually a good thing, may include nausea, fatigue, drowsiness, or a temporary increase in pain or a flu-like symptoms. This can start approximately 90 minutes after treatment and may last from 4 to 24 hours. Hydrating with water hill help to mitigate the symptoms. While reactions can occur, not everyone has them, and they have no real bearing on the efficacy of your treatment in general.
Contraindications?
FSM is rarely used across the brain, in the presence of pacemakers, or during pregnancy. FSM is not used in treating cancer.
