AMA, Other Leading Medical Organizations Urge Insurance for Non-Pharma/Integrative Pain Care- The Huffington Post

With rampant opioid prescription issues, many of the major medical organizations such as the American Medical Association, the American Pain Society and the Academy of Integrative Pain Management, are warming up to the idea that other forms of pain management therapy are needed and they cannot simply medicate “away” each patient’s pain complaints. But it seems there is a barrier for many patients who could benefit from services such as acupuncture. Many insurance policies do not have an acupuncture benefit, or if they do, it is limited. Will the insurance carriers change their policies to help their policy holders, time will tell. As I have written about before in my blog, there is a 3,000% rise in medical services as a result of opioid dependence. So obviously this is a very serious public health issue.
