What is Chiropractic?
Taking A Natural Systemic Approach To Healing
A chiropractor is a healthcare professional who treats disorders of the musculature, skeletal and nervous systems, including the effects of disorders of these systems on general health. Chiropractic care is used most often to treat nerve, muscle, and joint pain, including pain in the back, neck the joints of the arms or legs and headaches. Chiropractors also prescribe specific exercises to rehabilitate or prevent further problems and provide counseling regarding lifestyle choices to promote wellness.
What to Expect During a Chiropractic Visit
Chiropractors practice drug-free, hands-on medicine. A chiropractic visit will include an examination of the patient, diagnosis of sources of the discomfort the patient is experiencing, and treatment.
In addition to a physical examination, chiropractors may use laboratory tests, diagnostic imaging, and other diagnostic procedures to identify the source of a patient’s discomfort and determine if chiropractic treatment is appropriate.
Spinal Manipulation
The most common procedure performed by a chiropractor is a hands-on technique called a spinal manipulation or adjustment, during which the chiropractor manipulates the synovial joints between vertebra that make up the spine. These manipulations are preformed to realign the vertebra in the spine and restore mobility to the joints. They have been shown to provide pain relief, improve mobility, and may improve overall health by taking pressure off the spinal cord, which carries the nerves from the brain to all parts of the body.
Will a Chiropractor Work with my Physicians?
When dealing with conditions such as lower back pain or neck/shoulder pain, chiropractic medicine may be the primary treatment. However, a reputable chiropractor will work with your physician(s) when other health conditions are involved or when a chiropractic adjustment is not the appropriate method of treatment.
