Your heart is really a muscle, a little larger than the size of your fist and weighs between 7-15 ounces (200-425 grams). The heart is a special hollow, cone shaped muscle located between your lungs and behind your breastbone (sternum).

Your heart is a complex pump that sends blood around your body. Your blood carries important nutrients and oxygen to your cells and carries waste away from your cells.

The right side of your heart receives blood from the body which doesn’t have enough oxygen and then pumps this blood to the lungs to pick up oxygen. The left side of the heart then receives this oxygen rich blood from the lungs. The heart then pumps the blood that is full of oxygen out to your body!

Your Heart Beat

How does your heart beat? Before each beat, your heart fills with blood. Then the muscles in the heart contract to pump & move the blood along. When your heart contracts, it squeezes… for example try squeezing your hand into a fist. That’s kind of what your heart does so it can squirt & move out the blood. Your heart does this all day and all night, all the time.

In a person’s lifetime the heart may beat (contract & expand) more than 3.5 billion times. Each day, the average heart beats 100,000 times and pumps about 2000 gallons (7,571 liters) of blood!
