Diets high in antioxidants and fiber have been shown to help with keeping your brain healthy! The Standard American diet (SAD) is low in fiber and high in processed foods, refined carbohydrates, simple sugars and unhealthy fats. This then creates inflammation in your body which can affect your brain health including cognitive decline (which is trouble learning, using language or remembering things).

Top #1 Brain Healthy Food:

1. Blueberries—Blueberries are great for your brain including improving your memory! Research has shown that blueberries can even slow down mental aging and reverse age related changes in balance, coordination and motor function (movement).

Some of the brain benefits may occur since blueberries are high in antioxidants such as vitamins A, C and K, dietary fiber and antioxidant flavinoids (which are nutrients in plant-based foods).

These flavinoids which include anthocyanins, proanthocyanins, quercetin and ellagic acid can help to prevent free radicals from damaging your brain cells and nervous system since they are able to cross the blood brain barrier and protect your brain cells!

* Keep in mind that antioxidants protect your cells from getting damaged from free radicals. This may be important in preventing dementia and other brain diseases!

Tip #1: Eat a small cupful of blueberries a day and combine blueberries with the #2 brain food that will be revealed tomorrow!
