Vertebral Subluxation Complex

When a vertebral joint becomes tight, misaligned or moves out of its normal position, it is referred to in the chiropractic profession as the Vertebral Subluxation Complex (VSC). VSC can be caused by a wide range of issues ranging from a minor slip or bump to a car accident or any other trauma. When a vertebrae is subluxated, it can put pressure on nerves, blood vessels and other surrounding structures.

Most importantly, the subluxation interrupts the normal movement of nerve signals that carry messages between the body and the brain. Further, as time goes by, and the subluxation remains untreated, the spine and surrounding structures such as bones, discs, and joints can begin to degenerate.

This degeneration becomes more difficult when it advances and the surrounding muscles, nerves and bones begin to adapt to the breakdown process. The longer the subluxation is untreated, the longer it will take for correction.

A vertebral subluxation complex can be identified by its five components:

  • Spinal Kinesiopathology (abnormal movement or position of the bones)
  • Neuropathophysiology (nerve dysfunction due to pressure or irritation)
  • Myopathology (muscle changes such as spasm and atrophy)
  • Histopathology (cellular dysfunction)
  • Pathophysiology (abnormal tissue function, immune compromise)

Chiropractors are experts in the manipulation of the spine. Small, quick, and gentle movements to the spinal joints can stretch the joint capsule and ligaments, repositioning the vertebrae back into its natural position. Through a course of spinal treatment, a vertebral subluxation can be corrected, restoring normal movement, position, and nerve function.
