What is Neuropathy?
Neuropathy is usually short for peripheral neuropathy meaning a disease of the peripheral nervous system. Strictly speaking however, neuropathy is any disease or condition that affects any part of the nervous system. Symptoms of neuropathy often result in numbness, abnormal sensations called dysesthesias and allodynias that occur either spontaneously or in reaction to external stimuli, and characteristic form of pain, called neuropathic pain or neuralgia (burning pain) that is qualitatively different from the ordinary nociceptive pain which someone might experience from stubbing a toe or hitting a finger with a hammer which is initially, intense pain but subsides shortly after the trauma or insult has passed.
Neuropathic pain is usually perceived as a steady, burning and/or pins and needles and or electric shock sensations. The difference is due to the fact that ordinary pain stimulates only pain carrying fiber nerves conversely neuropathy patients symptoms result from firing both the pain and non-pain, touch, warm, cool) sensory nerves in the same areas producing signals that the spinal cord and brain don't normally expect to receive.
So what are the causes of peripheral neuropathy? Diabetes in patients over 50 years accounts for 1/3, constant use of statins, continuous inflammation from improper diet, chronic wear n tear mechanical trauma (sciatica), infections, leprosy, immune dysfunction/suppression due to chronic use of meds HIV, Chronic chemical exposure. Most of the neuropathies don't manifest overnight but take time to slowly desensitize/demylinate the nerves which in the geriatric population means decrease balance and an increase in the incidence of falls and hip fractures. Other more obscure causes are acute alcoholism, cancer, herpes, and shingles. The nervous system has a natural attrition that it loses sensitivity however in normal aging doesn't produce the following signs or symptoms.
So if you have any symptoms of numbness, tingling, burning, little gnats biting your legs at night, loss of balance because you cannot feel the soles of your feet then it's time to be evaluated by a Dr. trained in detection and di
agnosis of the condition.
If you are a candidate for Neuropathic rehab (new revolutionary natural care without taking meds or other harmful chemicals in your body) then you can make an informed consent decision on a health care program that's shown thru scientific research to have a 90% satisfaction rate with treatment.
We cordially invite you to explore the possibilities of alternative care to bring your energy and spirit back for a healthier life.
Sincerely,
Dr. Kent G. Carlomagno D.C.
