Hypertension, also known as high blood pressure, is a dangerous and common condition where the blood traveling through the heart does so at too high a pressure, which can stress the heart, brain and kidneys. 1 out of every 3 people in America have it, but many do not even realize it because it does not usually cause any direct, obvious pain. The causes behind each individual case of hypertension are unique and can vary with lifestyle, genetic and other health and disease concerns. Unchecked high blood pressure is a major risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, kidney failure and stroke. While medication is the most common route to alleviating hypertension, these medications come with several undesirable side effects. The good news is that chiropractic care can help naturally. Placentia chiropractor Dr. Julie Stewart and his team provides successful treatment for high blood pressure—without drugs.

What You Need to Know about High Blood Pressure

Because high blood pressure rarely manifests with pain, it should be measured at every checkup. If you have a family history of hypertension or cardiovascular disease, or if you have lifestyle patterns that boost your risks, you should be monitored more regularly.

There are two numbers recorded during each blood pressure measurement:

  • Systolic—The pressure measured as the heart pumps; should fall below 120. You have pre-hypertension if this number is between 121 and 139. 140 and above is considered high.
  • Diastolic—The pressure between heartbeats; should fall below 80. Pre-hypertension falls between 81 and 90. Above 90 is too high.

Chiropractic Care Can Provide Relief from High Blood Pressure

Several recent studies have shown that skilled chiropractic care is at least as effective as two widely-used medications at providing high blood pressure relief. If that sounds shocking, it shouldn’t. Any mechanical interference in the spinal column that pinches nerves prevents proper communication between the brain and the body’s organs. In the case of hypertension, nerves affecting blood pressure can be pinched by a crooked atlas vertebrae. This is the very top vertebra in your spine, situated directly under your skull. Chiropractor Dr. Lee or one of his associate doctors can correct this and other spinal misalignments so that your central nervous system can communicate with your heart, bringing it back into balance.
